The UW-Eau Claire American Indian Studies program is co-sponsoring the Running for Pine Ridge 5K Oct. 26. The event is a fundraiser for a volunteer trip to the Pine Ridge reservation in South Dakota. In June 2014, Heather Ann Moody, associate lecture of American Indian Studies, and a group of UW-Eau Claire social work and American Indian studies students, will travel to Pine Ridge to volunteer on the reservation. Proceeds from the 5K will help the group purchase paint and supplies for their volunteer work with the Oglala Sioux Youth Homeless Shelter, Oglala Sioux Veterans Homeless Shelter, SuAnne Big Crow's Boys and Girls Club and Nagi Apikiyapi Elementary School. Registration for the 5K begins at 8 a.m. in Davies Center, followed by the walk/run at 9 a.m. The fee for the race is $20 per participant. Prizes will be awarded for first-place winners in four brackets: men's run, women's run, men's walk and women's walk. For more information, contact Kristi Malec at firstname.lastname@example.org.
