Grammy-nominated Jazz Ensemble I, under the direction of Robert Baca, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 6 in the Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center.
The concert will feature several student compositions, including the 2013 ASCAP Composition of the Year Award selection "The Sparrow Was Gone In An Instant," by 2011 graduate Aaron Hedenstrom. The second half of the concert will feature a selection from Jazz Ensemble I's 18th CD release, "Jazz In Clear Water — Black, Brown and Beige."
In a tribute to Thelonius Monk, the concert also will feature special guest Richard Johnson, former pianist with the Wynton Marsalis Septet and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra. Johnson, born in Pittsburgh, was schooled by some of the most legendary jazz muscians. He has shared his gift of jazz with audiences around the world — both as a representative of the United States through the U.S. State Department and by accompanying jazz icons such as Bobby Watson, Herbie Hancock and Arturo Sandoval.
Tickets, available at the Service Center, are $6 for the general public; $4 for seniors 62 and older, youth 17 and younger, and UW-Eau Claire faculty and staff; and $1.50 for UW-Eau Claire students. Open attachment below for complete event details:
