"The Constitution and a Cross: Debating the First Amendment Case of American Legion v. American Humanist Association"

A panel of experts will discuss a Supreme Court case (American Legion v. American Humanist Association) on the constitutionality of a cross-shaped war memorial on public land. The panel will take place on the same day that the case will be argued in front of the Supreme Court. The panelists will debate whether or not the monument in question violates the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

Panelists will include Rick Esenberg (President of Wisconsin Institute for Law and Liberty), James Szymalak (Assistant Professor of Public Administration at UW-La Crosse), and Jerry Thomas (Associate Professor of Political Science at UW-Oshkosh). The event will be moderated by Eric T. Kasper, Associate Professor of Political Science and Director of the Center for Constitutional Studies at UW-Eau Claire.

This event is sponsored by the UWEC Center for Constitutional Studies and the UWEC Pre-Law Club. Funding for this event was provided by the UW-Stout Center for the Study of Institutions and Innovation.

Free copies of the Constitution will be available for those in attendance.
