"Landscaping with Native Plants"
Peter Gallagher, professor emeritus from Louisiana Tech University

Would you like to make your yard more “earth friendly”?  Spend less time weeding and watering?  Then you might want to hear about “Landscaping with Native Plants” on Thursday, April 11 from noon-1 pm.  The talk is by Peter W. Gallagher, Ph.D., who is retired after teaching 40 years as Professor of Plant and Environmental Science at Louisiana Tech University (Ruston, LA).  His lecture will consider the benefits of incorporating native plants into your landscape.  The advantages of natives over exotic species, selection and placement of appropriate plants, and site analysis / microclimate identification will be discussed.  Examples of design techniques and sample landscapes will be shown along with precautions and potential pitfalls of native landscaping.

Dr. Gallagher is originally from Madison, Wisconsin and his wife [Martha Ritzinger] is from Rice Lake.  His B.S. [Landscape Architecture] and M.S. [Horticulture] degrees are from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.  His Ph.D. [Landscape Horticulture] is from the Ohio State University.  He and his wife purchased a home on Rice Lake where they plan to reside in retirement.

Lecture attendees are welcome to bring their lunch to the presentation.

Thursdays @ the U lecture series will run throughout the spring semester. The series, partly funded by the UW-Barron County Foundation, will explore topics in the arts, sciences, public affairs, literary fields and cultural areas. While hosting a variety of speakers, the university does not seek to endorse or promote a particular idea, opinion, topic or product over others.

These lectures are free and open to the public.
