Mark Bernat |
The UW-Eau Claire music and theatre arts department will present two guest artist recitals featuring renowned double bassist Mark Bernat Feb. 17. The recitals are free and open to the public.
Bernat will perform at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. in Phillips Recital Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. The 7:30 p.m. performance will feature the music of composer Alec Wilder. Selections will include Wilder's "Sonata for Tuba and Piano," "Sonata for Double Bass and Piano" and "Sonata for Double Bass, Tuba and Piano." Bernat will be joined by Dr. Jerry Young, professor emeritus of tuba and euphonium, tuba; Dr. Barbara Young, lecturer of music, piano; senior Matthew Turek, Monroe, euphonium; and senior Alex Widstrand, Eau Claire, piano.
A native of Poland, Bernat has appeared in major concert halls throughout the United States, Europe, Israel and China. He trained at the High School of Performing Arts and the Juilliard School in New York City. Bernat has served on the teaching faculties of the Oberlin Conservatory and the University of Texas and has given master classes at major universities around the nation. The New York Times has described Bernat as a "skilled instrumentalist and sensitive musician."
